An AIoT ultrasonic repeller built to stop monkeys from damaging farms.
- To tackle crop damage caused by Formosan macaques, we built an AIoT ultrasonic repeller, “Hungry Monkeys Begone”, to replace traditional methods such as manual watch, scarecrows and electric fences
- Repels macaques with 22–65 kHz ultrasound that people can’t hear but macaques find unpleasant; image recognition reads their reaction, and if they show no fear the frequency switches quickly so they don’t get used to it
- Built from an Arduino robot car, a Raspberry Pi, a camera and an ultrasonic speaker for about NT$6,300 in total; recognition was trained indoors on a dataset of toy monkeys, then field-tested on farmland in Changbin, Taitung
- During a week of on-site observation the macaques did not return; teamed up with our advisor, a senior and classmates, and won the Potential Award as the Soochow Big Data team
